WHAT IS CAPOEIRA??? Practiced widely today in urban Brazil and elsewhere, capoeira is a complex Afro-Brazilian martial art that originated in early slave culture. At once game, sport, mock combat, and ritualized performance, it involves two players who dance and battle within a ring of musicians and singers. Feats requiring great acrobatic athleticism and strength combine with music and poetry in a form as expressive in movement as it is in word.

The two men squatted facing each other in the hot sun, sweat pouring off their faces, their clothes wet and clinging to their bodies. Behind them colleagues played musical bows and tambourines as the crowd pressed in on the cleared area in the plaza which was the arena for their contest. The festival had already been going on for two days and the capoeira players - for that was the name of the sport the men were playing - had kept the action going continously for most of that time. The games had moved from time to time, from the market place to the main plaza and back, once even onto the portico of the church, but breaks in the action had been brief, and the players had achieved a state of exhaustion that bordered on trance. Yet it was precisely this bone weariness which the men sought, as a kind of liberation, freeing them from social obligations and personal worries, relaxing bodies to an elastic flexibility and focusing their attention on the game and the game alone.
